The Melbourne Jazz Dance Association is proud to present the 6th Australian Hellzapoppin’ Prize in 2008!

[NB: Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize Rules and Guidelines]

7:30pm sharp (doors open to the public 7.00pm), Friday 28th November 2008

Ormond Hall,557 St Kilda Rd Melbourne

$35 or free for MLX8 pass holders

Dress to impress

The AHP is a national contest designed to encourage lindy hop in Australia. Technically allowing any move or style of swing dancing, the only real rule in the AHP is that dancers embody the spirit of lindy hop and jazz music - inspired, improvised and exciting! Rather than following a strict set of rules, judges look for musicality, partnership, repertoire, innovation and connection in the competing couples.

Prizes

In 2008 the winning couple will receive an official AHP trophy and 2 full passes to:

SWING CAMP OZ
JANUARY 25-30, 2009
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA

History of the AHP

The inaugural AHP was planned by a committee of interested dancers to coincide with the 2002 Melbourne Lindy Exchange and to adhere to the rules and criteria of the Harlem Jazz Dance Festival (HJDF). The AHP follows these rules today and is endorsed by the American Institute for Vernacular Jazz Dance (AIVJD), founded by world-renowned lindy hopper Janice Wilson.
The AHP emphasises wild and fast lindy hop, no-rules dancing in the spirit of the dance competitions of the Savoy Ballroom and 1930s lindy hop. Each AHP competition sees air steps, seriously hot jazz and the burn of a dance floor on fire.
This year the MJDA hosts the competition for the first time and challenges Australian dancers to bring their very own hot stuff in competition for the Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize.

Previous AHP winners:

2007 Cathie Gough & Kieran Yee (VIC)
2006 Annie Ryan & Shane McCarthy (WA)
2004 Noni Clarke & Josh McKiterick (VIC)
2003 Sarah Farrelly & Anthony Wheaton (VIC)
2002 Nicole Smith & John Tenaglia (VIC)

Competitor Information

Competitors should click here for registration and more information.

AHP Audience

Hellzapoppin' at MLX8 is not a quiet night for sitting back and relaxing - not even for the audience. The AHP asks its audiences to get involved as well. Competitors are awarded points for the 'audience feedback' - the couples who pull the crowd to their feet, have them cheering and applauding and making some serious noise will win extra points.

Because the MJDA is all about social dancing, the MLX8 Hellzapoppin' night will feature three hours of dancing to one of Australia's most experienced, most authentic Big Swing Bands - the JW Swing Orchestra. Once we've seen the finest competitive lindy hop in Australia, we'll be clearing the floor for social dancing... and reminding you that the Ormond Hall bar serves a wide range of local and imported beers from their extensive menu. Take a dance, take a drink, or take a breath of fresh air in the patio garden...

... and dress to impress at the MLX8 Hellzapoppin' competition: help us bring this special night at the Savoy to life with your finest fancy wear.

Prize

The winning couple will receive an official AHP trophy each and a FULL PASS each for:

SWING CAMP OZ
JANUARY 25-30, 2009
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA.

Please also note that the Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize is NOT a qualifying round for the Hellzapoppin' World Championship.

Costs

The competitor entry fee is $15 per competitor for MLX8 Pass holders.
The fee is $50 for non pass holders (including AHP entry fee + 3 hours social dancing to the JW Swing Orchestra at Ormond Hall).

Registrations close 10th November 2008.

Competition Rules

The Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize is not a rules-based competition, but instead aims to capture the spirit of lindy hop.

There are no rules regarding men or women leading and following. Anyone can lead and anyone can follow.

There are no rules about "swing content".

There are no disqualifications.

But competitors are asked to lend their dancing the Savoy edge with glamorous 1930s, 40s or smart evening attire (ie not Tshirts and jeans). Exception: Shoes, wear anything that gives you the Hellzapoppin' edge.

Simply ensure you are registered properly, respect your fellow competitors, stay safe and have fun!

Elements

Within the competition couples will dance in two different formats:

1. All-skate (i.e.: social dance format): all couples within a given heat/round dance on the floor simultaneously. The judges will circulate to view all couples. Couples are expected to practice safe and responsible floor-craft in the all-skate without endangering other couples on the dance floor.

2. Shine Battle (i.e.: phrase battle or jam session format): two couples dance at a time, dancing for two phrases. Like a jam session, the couples take turns, dancing one or two at a time in an assigned order, until the song ends. It will be ensured that all couples receive the same number of shines. Couples are expected to recognise phrasing and are held accountable for entering and exiting their shines as timing requires. Musical phrasing will be varied and will include both Standard and Blues song forms.

Judging Criteria

Couples will be judged on musicality, partnership, repertoire, innovation, connection and audience feedback. The Judges decisions are final.

1. Musicality
a. Interpretation - Dancers will be judged on their ability to improvise and respond to the music, within the context of the partnership, without disrupting lead and follow.

b. Song form - Dancers are expected to recognise phrasing, including Blues and Standard song forms. Dancers are judged on their ability to reflect the beginning and ending of phrases through movement. Timing is essential.

2. Partnership
Followers are judged on their ability to improvise within the paradigm the leads create. Leaders are judged upon maturity in allowing followers opportunity to improvise.

3. Repertoire - Couples are judged on the breadth of their lindy hop repertoire including swing-outs, Charleston, breakaways and air steps. Dancers will be judged on their ability to select dance steps appropriate to the music.

4. Innovation
Creativity is encouraged.

5. Connection
Couples will be judged upon their ability to have a conversation within the dance using verbal, tactile and visual lead and follow. Call and response is encouraged.

6. Audience feedback
The reaction of spectators will be monitored and gauged independently of the designated judges.

Competition Format

The Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize consists of 3 preliminary heats (each with no more than 10 couples), a semi-final featuring 5 couples, and a final featuring 2 couples.

The heats, semi-final and final will be run at the start of the evening, 7:30pm till 9:00pm, with time for the competitors to catch their breath.

Which heat you are in and what order you are in that heat will be randomly assigned on the night. You will be told this information at the compulsory Competitor Meeting at 7.00pm.

Music throughout the competition will range in tempo from Medium, i.e. 160bpm to Very Fast, i.e. 320bpm.

As a guide use the following:
160-190 = Medium
190-220 = Medium fast
220-260 = Fast
260-320 = Very Fast

The competition format is as follows (this may be revised):

1. HEATS
All the competitors will be divided into three heats. You will compete in one heat only.

Each heat will consist of:
1. Shine Battle, fast tempo, 1 song
2. All-Skate, medium to fast tempo, 1 song

The judges will then select 5 couples out of all of the heats to progress to the semi-final. The judges may choose any number of couples out of any heat, there is no requirement for them to choose a couple from each heat.

2. SEMI-FINAL
Five couples.

The semi-final will consist of:
1. Shine Battle, fast tempo, 1 song
2. All-Skate, fast tempo, 1 song
The judges will then select two couples to progress to the final.

3. FINAL

Two couples dance for two final songs, consisting of:
1. All Skate / Shine Battle, very fast tempo, 1 song

Process On the Night

Hellzapoppin' program:
6.30pm - 7.00pm Competitor Registration
7.00pm - 7.30pm Compulsory Competitor Meeting
7.00pm Doors open to public
7.30pm sharp Competition begins
1. Competitors have special entry to Ormond Hall from 6.30pm to 7.00pm (before the doors open to spectators at 7.00pm). All competitors MUST arrive and register at the Competitor Registration Desk BEFORE 7.00pm, where you will complete the registration process, and receive your competitor number (leads only will be required to wear a number).

2. You will not be able to compete unless your registration is complete and checked and you have been given your number. This must be completed before 7.00pm.

3. A COMPULSORY competitor meeting will be held from 7.00pm sharp. ALL competitors must attend this meeting. You will receive information about which heat you are in, your order in that heat, the format of the evening, competition rules, elements and judging criteria and any important last minute information. You'll also have the opportunity to meet the other competitors.

4. You are responsible for being ready for your heat on the night. Please ensure you are ready and warmed up for your heat: the competition will go ahead without you if you do not arrive when your name is called out. Listen out for the MC who will keep everyone aware of the format throughout the evening.

5. Leads, you will be required to wear a number for the competition. Please ensure you wear it in a clear and obvious place. This is for your benefit - if the judges can not see your number, they will not be able to note you down to advance to the next round.

6. During your heat, the MC may ask you to stand still in your place or face a certain direction so the judges can see your number - please pay attention and listen closely to the MC for such instructions.

What is a lindy exchange?

A Lindy Exchange is a lindy hop (swing dance) event where dancers in one city host a weekend of social dancing, inviting dancers from all over the world to come and share their local venues and bands. Hosting is a big lindy exchange tradition, where locals give visitors a place to stay in their own homes.

But really, it's an excuse to party like it's 1939: dancing, dancing and more dancing. With some time set aside for talking and eating (naptimes are optional).

So what's MLX8?

MLX8 is the 8th annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange. MLX8 (as with MLX5, MLX6 and MLX7) is a non-profit event, run entirely at cost to save you $$.

Do you have to be able to dance to come?

Of course not - we are running early evening events which feature live bands and (limited) seating. Come along and enjoy the music! But remember: dancing is the main focus of the weekend, and we've chosen venues with excellent dance floors... and only small seating areas. The only exception is the Hellzapoppin' competition on Friday night - there'll be plenty of seating for non competitors!

Do you have to be a good dancer to come?

No way - we welcome all dancers, no matter how much experience they have, or how 'good' they are. It'll help if you can do a swing out or a bit of 6-count, but all you'll really need is to be able to say "would you like to dance?"

Many of the Australian cities organise group trips to MLX (and other exchanges) which are made up of dancers with all sorts of experience and dancing abilities. Why not organise a group of friends and come together if you're a bit shy? But exchanges are all about meeting and dancing with strangers: many people arrive knowing nobody and leave with dozens of new friends from all over the world!

Are there any lessons or workshops?

Nu-uh: this is an entire weekend of nothing but social dancing.
If you are interested in classes, Melbourne is home to literally dozens of swing dance teachers, and there'll be plenty more flying into town for the weekend who might be interested in teaching private classes. To make contact with them, try the Australian Swing Talk discussion board

Is there anything to do at MLX8 besides dancing?

You bet - we're organising all sorts of non-dancing and daytime activities, from visits to local scenic spots to meals and shopping trips.
The welcome drinks venue is traditionally packed with backpacks and excited dancers catching up with old friends and making new ones.
These are always very friendly events - we always recommend them to out-of-towners and new dancers, as they give them a chance to meet people before the main dancing events, and give old exchange buddies a chance to catch up. They are usually casual, friendly, noisy events.

Volunteering for MLX8

We couldn't run the Melbourne Lindy Exchange without the help of the many people who volunteer their time and skills over the MLX and in the weeks and months leading up to the weekend. Volunteering for such a large event is not only really useful for the organising team, it's also a way to develop skills. Interested in learning to set up sound gear? Handling ticket sales? Managing public relations? If you are, we'd certainly appreciate your help.
Even if you're only interested in doing a bit of tidying up over the weekend, volunteers have the opportunity to purchase a cheaper MLX8 pass.

Want more information about volunteering at MLX8? Email us at:
volunteer [at] mlx8 [dot] com or grab an MLX8 coordinator in person.

To simplify the registration process you register for passes and as a volunteer on the same form. If you do not wish to purchase a pass do not select any options in that section of the form.
Register as an MLX8 volunteer here.

MLX8 Sponsors and Friends

We've already had lots of help with MLX8 from many people all over Australia, doing all sorts of jobs, from promoting MLX8 in their classes and newsletters (both in Melbourne and interstate), allowing us to promote MLX8 at their classes and dances, producing our MLX8 logo (thanks Scott Fraser), photocopying material, donating materiels, sponsoring the Australian Hellzapoppin Prize (thanks so much to Swing Camp Oz), sponsoring MLX8 (thanks Swing Patrol and Gorgeous Gear), running 'special MLX events' (thanks to the Madame Dynamite's crew)...
There are too many things to name - but we appreciate them all!

If you're interested in helping out with official sponsorship, please do drop us a line at questions [at] mlx8 [dot] com - we appreciate the help!

MLX8 is truly the work of a vast team of people - local, interstate and international. We're very grateful for all the help they've given so far and are very proud to announce MLX8 as the eighth annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange, brought to you by the MJDA!

Hosting

To register for hosting at MLX8 consult the registration page.

Hosting questions?

If you want to enquire about hosting at MLX8, contact us by emailing hosting [at] mlx8 [dot] com.

Who can be hosted at MLX8?

We offer hosting to all guests who are registered MLX8 pass holders. But we're happy to have any local Melbourne person register as a host.

So what's hosting all about?

Hosting visitors and being hosted by locals is a long standing tradition with the MLX and lindy exchanges around the world. It's part of the exchange spirit to offer a bed for a visitor, and to know they'll 'exchange' the favour when you come to visit in their city.
Hosting is also kind to the shoestring budget. Hosted visitors not only save valuable money (that can be spent on presents or beer or dancing) when they stay with locals, they also make lasting friendships and learn a lot more about the city they're visiting. Hosts, in turn, often find that having a houseguest for an exchange makes the weekend just that little bit more fun.

What do hosts do?

Locals simply offer a bed (or mattress or airbed or couch) to visiting dancers. The usual deal for visitors is that they're offered somewhere to sleep (with or without bedding), somewhere to wash, a basic breakfast and tips on how to get around.
Hosts aren't expected to host their guests for any longer than the length of the exchange itself, though they may choose to do so. It's a good idea to discuss this before the exchange weekend.
Hosts with cars usually drive their guests to events with them. Hosts using public transport either tip their guest off on who to hit for lifts, or they take them with them on the tram (for more information about travelling around Melbourne, consult the MLX8 travel page).
It's a good idea for hosts to confirm their guest's travel plans and arrival/departure times as soon as possible.
Hosts should also read the what do guests do? section as well.

What do guests do?

Guests are usually expected to tidy up after themselves, respect their host's space and buy them a couple of drinks (or lovely presents) in gratitude. We ask you to only use your host's phone and internet access if it is offered. It's often a good idea to invest in a pre-paid phone card before you arrive.
Guests should also read the what do hosts do? section as well.

How much further you go is entirely up to you. But particularly good hosts and houseguests soon gain a reputation on the exchange circuit, and are very popular come registration time.
Particularly bad house guests and hosts also gain a reputation.

Other Accomodation Options

I'm not keen on being hosted, where can I stay?

There is a range of places to stay in Melbourne, particularly in the inner city areas where we're holding our events.
You can find out about hostels at hostelz.com. Past MLX visitors have had kind words for the Nunnery hostel in Fitzroy.
Consult the Visit Melbourne accommodation guide for other accommodation types, or check wotif.com for information about last-minute and other accomodation.

To Melbourne

Plane

Consult this site for information about flying to Melbourne from overseas.

Fly from within Australia on the premium national airline Qantas or with the budget airline Virgin Blue. Fly from most cities to Melbourne with the budget airline Jet Star.

Fly into the main Melbourne airport Tullamarine (22kms north of the CBD), or into the less convenient-for-the-city Avalon airport.
Travel from Tullamarine to the city by:
a) posh option: taxi (expect to pay around $40 into the city);
b) mid-range option: the cheap and efficient Skybus, which offers free connections from Spencer Street station to most major hotels ($15 one-way/ $24 return - you can also purchase a 'Skybus Metcard' daily or 2-hourly ticket for use on metropolitan trams, trains and buses - $21 and $18 respectively); or
c) shoe-string option: try posting on the Swing Talk Board to scab a lift with someone.

Train and Bus

Catch the train or Coach from most major cities into Melbourne's Spencer Street Station. From here, you can catch any one of a number of metropolitan buses, trains or trams.

Ferry

The ferry between Tasmania and the mainland leaves from Devonport in Tasmania and arrives in Port Melbourne in Melbourne.

Around Melbourne

Hire cars

The usual range of hire car providers are available in Melbourne, though the rent-a-bomb company is usually the cheapest.

Public Transport

The Melbourne tram, bus and rail network is easy to negotiate, and the trams which cover the inner-city extensively are Melbourne icons.
Visitors should be aware that ticket machines onboard trams only accept coins and that the drivers carry no change and cannot advise on ticketing issues. They will, however, assist with route advice.

The Metlink website gives full details about travelling on public transport in Melbourne. The local area maps are particularly useful. The Fares and Tickets page gives full information about ticketing costs and types.

Ticketing varies between zones. Travellers may purchase two-hourly, daily and city saver tickets onboard buses and trams and at train stations. There are a range of other tickets (including Weekly tickets, and Sunday Savers which are only $2.50 for all-day travel in any zone, on any tram, train or bus on a Sunday) and packs of tickets (including 5 and 10 packs of daily or 2-hour tickets) available from retail outlets, metshops and train stations.

Most public transport services finish at around midnight, though there is a limited night rider bus service which services some routes after midnight.

Scabbing a lift

In the best spirit of shoe string budgeting, you may manage to 'scab' - borrow - a lift with a local to and between venues. The best way to do this is by asking at an event, or by posting on the busy Australian Swing Talk board. Chocolate will usually get you a long way on this route.

We’re reanimating the best bits of the swing era with some of the swingingest bands and DJs Australia can offer. And we're working closely with all these exciting musicians to tailor the music for the best dancing experience we can bring you.

The most excellent DJs will start you screaming at the lindy goodness and provide a range music from speed-freaking, to delightfully wicked sweet bluesing goodness.

Bands

The JW Swing Orchestra

Just when we thought the JW Swing Orchestra couldn’t get any better they add more of the best swingin’ tunes to their repertoire. They'll be be playing the lindy hoppers' favourites rarely heard live today such as Jeep Jockey Jump, The Fox, Why Don’t You Do Right and more. We just had to ask them back to kick off the weekend in grand style.

The 19 piece JW Swing Orchestra has been in existence since 1974 under the leadership of clarinetist John Wanner. This is one of Melbourne's swingingest big bands and their sound is firmly rooted in the big bands of the 30s and 40s.
JW has played many Lindy Hop events including the World Hellzapoppin' Competition in 2004, the Melbourne Lindy Exchange in 2006, 2005, 2002 and 2001, Melbourne Swing Aid Tsunami fundraiser in 2005, multiple Easter Hops, the 2001 Swing Patrol Christmas Ball and the Big Swing II. And, on top of all that, they also play for the wider community each year in the Summer Music Series in parks. Many dancers have been discovering them at their regular gigs at the Austrian Club in Melbourne, one of the best social nights of the year (outside MLX of course ;) ). This band loves playing to the dancers and gets the energy level pumpin’, and is a fond favourite of many Melbourne dancers.

Carol Ralph with Bob Sedergreen and Friends

Carol Ralph, one of Australia’s most dynamic and charismatic jazz vocalists, returns to Melbourne after her debut at MLX7. Although the Blues is her great forte, Carol doesn’t restrict herself to this style. She’s an innovative singer and possesses the essential ingredient in all good jazz: ‘the sound of surprise’. Her love of life, people and singing adds to her great stage presence. She has performed throughout the world at jazz festivals and has toured extensively with the The Spirit of New Orleans Jazz Band in the UK, Switzerland, Japan and New Zealand and of course appears regularly at jazz festivals in Australia.

Bob Sedergreen infuses the music with authority of style, creative expression and wit - to hear him is always exciting and satisfying. Bob has been associated with some of the most recognised talents internationally, including Jimmy Witherspoon, Nat Adderley and Dizzy Gillespie and the Australian artists John Sangster, Don Burrows, Brian Brown and Judy Jacques.

Bob's musical abilities find him leading and working with a plethora of diverse ensembles and groups. From the traditional to the most contemporary, He has recorded over twenty albums, three CDs and three cassettes. Bob has toured extensively both here and overseas including Montreal, Malaysia and Europe. He has been involved in the introduction of new talent.
In 1990 Bob won the Inaugural Jazz Award for Australia's Best Keyboardist.

The Sweet Lowdowns

The Sweet Lowdowns are a swing quartet hailing from Melbourne, Australia, having met in Canberra in the late 20th Century. The band consists of Sandra Talty (vocals, drums), Michael McQuaid (reeds), Liam O'Connell (guitar) and Richard Mander (string bass).

The band's name refers to the Gershwin tune and the Woody Allen film of the same name, "Sweet and Lowdown".

Perhaps imagine Lester Young, and Billie Holiday traveling to Paris and jamming with a stripped down hot club-style rhythm section. Or Mildred Bailey sitting in with Edmond Hall, Charlie Christian on acoustic guitar. This may give an idea of the influences, but the music is truly the result of the harmonious balance of the personalities that comprise it.

The Sweet Lowdowns members have played jazz with a number of prominent Australian jazz musicians, including Len Barnard, Graeme Bell, Bob Barnard, Geoff Power, Graeme Coyle, John Morrison, Steve Grant and the late Tom Baker, to name just a few - and are now honoured to regularly join such great performers on festival bills around the nation.

Listen: to the Sweet Lowdowns here

The Sweet Lowdowns play from 9:15pm at the Saturday night Dawn of the Dead at Forever Dance. Tickets are $30 or free with an MLX8 pass.

Chris Tanner's Virus

Chris Tanner's Virus have played a Saturday afternoon gig at the Laundry for years, where the band plays solid jazz to a mixed crowd of jazzniks and locals.
Virus favour early swing and New Orleans styles. They specialise in scorchingly fast music which will please fans of 20s style charleston and breakaway, but their sets also feature the grittiest slow drags ever to tempt a dancer's fancy.
Virus are amenable to requests, so dancers should look up their old skool favourites before the gig.

Virus play at Saturday's Something Wicked This Way Comes at the Laundry (50 Johnston St Fitzroy). Doors are open all afternoon, though the band goes on at 4pm. Entry is free, as it is every Saturday afternoon.

This event showcases a regular local gig, and is not run by the MLX8 team.

DJs

Noni Clarke

Melbourne

Sam Carroll

Sydney

Sam is a big old music nerd. She loves swinging jazz from the 30s and 40s, but won't sneer at a little new testament action from the 50s or the twenty first century. And she keeps a special place in her heart for Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. She'll definitely scratch your itch, but she also has a secret passion for supergroove - but don't tell anyone.
Sam started DJing in 2006 and has DJed a few fully sick Australian exchanges: Hullabaloo '07, Devil City Swing '08 and '07, Canberrang '08, Blues Before Sunrise '08, MSF '07 and '08, MLX6 and MLX7 and SLX '06. She used to live in Melbourne and now she doesn't.

Sarah Farrelly

Melbourne

Sarah Farrelly is one of Melbourne’s favourite dancers and DJs. Doing her bit to get women known for not only their swivels, she's been a regular behind the desk at local events for years. Sarah is one of the House DJs at her venue Madame Dynamite's and has had the pleasure of DJing at various interstate events including Margaret River Summer Camp, Lismore/Camp Oz, Tasmania and Brisbane. Sarah was one of two finalists in the Lismore Dance Camp's Battle of the DJs (2006). Add to this her International DJ experience at Camp Jitterbug (Seattle USA) and Carla Heiney's Swing Central (San Francisco, USA) and you can bet your bottom dollar that swingin' along to Sarah's tunes is something that you don’t want to miss.

She likes to play a real mix when she DJs and is conscious of playing tracks that are going to get every dancer up on the floor and staying there! Her favourite artists to spin are Lucky Millinder, Chick Webb, Jimmie Lunceford, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet, Jimmy Witherspoon, Count Baise and loves to combine these with some great vocalists such as Ella, Carmen McRae, Ernestine Anderson and Diane Schuur.

She’s a little bit crazy, is Sarah – so at times she’ll push the tempos up! What’s more, you can probably catch her dancing along with y’all from behind the DJ booth!

Scott Fraser

Melbourne

Scott loves all jazz music (hard bop and early Louis Armstrong being his favourites) but when it comes to DJing for swing dancers, it has to be swinging jazz all the way. Kansas City/party-vibe style makes the foundation of his set with transitions into hot jazz, blues and groove.
He started spinning for swing dancers in 2001 as the regular DJ at Sunday Afternoon Swing (SAS) at Hobart’s premier social event. In that time he also co-hosted a weekly swing/jazz/rockabilly radio show on Hobart’s community youth station, Edge Radio. In 2005 he left the state to live overseas where he played at the occasional international gig including The Munich Lindy Exchange 2005 and 2006 and The London Dancers Own NYE Party.
Contrary to popular belief he is not a native Tasmanian but born and bred in Sydney. He now resides in Melbourne where he enjoys drinking, eating and scribbling.

Keith Hsuan

Melbourne

Trevor Hutchison

Perth

Trevor centres his sets around vintage 1930s, 40s and 50s grooves aimed to keep the dance floor active and the party revelling. He's a somewhat obsessive collector and is continuously in search of the next killer-diller. He has a particular passion for the original bands of Harlem and songs featuring dudes yelling about food. In addition to deejaying at many of Australia's biggest swing events, Trevor has featured as a guest DJ on Yehoodi Radio and at the Herräng Dance Camp in Sweden.

Trevor's DJing highlights include:
- Herräng Dance Camp, Sweden
- Yehoodi Radio Guest DJ August 2007
- Hullabaloo 2005 - 2007
- Melbourne Lindy Exchange 2006 - 2007
- The Famous Spiegeltent, Melbourne
- Melbourne Swing Festival 2006 - 2007
- Canberräng 2007
- Perth International Arts Festival

Dan Ng

Melbourne

I just wanna give people the most fun they can possibly have swing dancing! So the music I use must always *give* something that dancers can latch onto- such as a driving bass line, a vocal drippin' with attitude, some killer hand-clappin' or a one-two battle between instruments. As a regular Swing DJ in the Melbourne scene for the last 2 years, and in London for as many years before that I'm always ready to make it PARTY TIME for the dancers!

Tim Oon

Melbourne

Tim has a simple philosophy when DJing: if he wouldn't dance to it, he doesn't play it! His sets are filled with swinging vocals, intricate piano solos and bass lines that just scream swingout. While he favours HiFi swing from the greats such as Basie and Ellington, you'll hear a mix from a wide variety of artists from Lucky Millinder to George Gee, Oscar Peterson to Outkast as well as a strong showing from his favourite vocalist Ella Fitzgerald.

Matt Riddle

Melbourne

Matt has been DJing since 1999, and particularly loves to work the floor with a combination of tunes from swingin’ small bands, riffs straight out of New Orleans and Kansas City, and Savoy big band classics. He has been a DJ at some of the biggest Lindy Hop events around the globe, including Herrang for the last 4 years running, SwingCity 2003 (Harlem) and SwingCity 2004 (Melbourne), Hop in the Spring (Hamburg), Barswingona, The Snowball (Stockholm) and the London Lindy Exchange. He was the first Australian guest DJ on Yehoodi Radio, and has won DJ battles from Paris to Perth.

Bill Borgida, International Lindy Hop instructor and DJ:
“Matt has a really good ear for what gets the dancers going. He is the best DJ I’ve heard from down under! I’d have him DJ any dance, any time!”

Manu Smith, International Lindy Hop instructor and DJ:
“Matt kicked my butt at last year’s Melbourne Lindy Exchange. The only reason I won was because it would look bad if the guy who was running the event, won the DJ battle also. It was a pleasure DJing with him. He and I share a common passion for music that really swings and I must say, he’s an excellent choice…besides myself of course!”

Solomon Douglas, International Lindy Hop instructor and DJ:
“Matt’s DJing reminds me eerily of my own. He plays lots of really great music and no fluff, and it all swings like mad and makes me want to either stay on the dancefloor or jog over to the DJ booth and ask what’s playing!”

Brenda Starr

Seattle

DJ Brenda Starr is a house DJ at the Century Ballroom in Seattle and spins regularly
around the Pacific NW for both lindy and blues events. She has played at many exchanges including Herrang, SoFlex, Denver, LA and will be traveling down under to spin at MLX 08.
Brenda loves Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Wynton Marsalis and Ernestine Anderson
equally although her swing lover is Jack Teagarden. Seattle is a great place to be a swing dj because of the variety of music the dancers enjoy, and Brenda is looking forward to bringing this variety to Australia with her!

Beck Scouller

Canberra

Bex started DJing in Hobart in 2001 with some fellow dancers, Scottie and Duncan. The trio started SAS - Sunday Afternoon Swing - which is still a regular Tasswing event. The trio even had their very own swing radio show called Well Swung (the boys named the show). They were on the airways for a couple of years before going their separate ways. Bex is now in Canberra where she DJs at dance events and she also has a spot on community radio. Bex’s show Down in the Basement plays lounge, jazz, swing, blues to soul and more. Bex has also DJed at interstate events including CCB, BOTR and and MLX. And as always she is looking forward to another MLX.

Russell Turner

Canberra

Russell has been DJing for the last five years in the Canberra scene. What started as a necessity has developed into a love arising out of his interest in music of all types. Since then he has DJed on a regular basis at Jumptown events and coordinated the DJing at several Canberrang exchanges.
He has DJed at various national events including Melbourne Lindy Exchange, Sydney Lindy Exchange, Devil City Swing, Hullabaloo, Church City Blues, Blues Before Sunrise and Swing Camp Oz. One highlight was taking out the Iron DJ title at the 2005 MLX. Russell has also DJed internationally at the Sea, Sun and Swing Dance Camp in the south of France and at the London Lindy Exchange. Another highlight was being featured as a Guest DJ on the Yehoodi Radio Show.
His goal as a swing DJ is to see people up on the dance floor enjoying themselves. It is also to challenge dancers of all levels and musically take them out of their comfort zone. To this end he believes in variety and DJs across the spectrum from old skool to new skool, from old-time to current, from groove to hot jazz. Russell is also passionate about blues, soul and exploring the best that Australia has to offer.

Anthony Wheaton

Melbourne

Now a grumpy old man of the swing scene, DJ 'Chocko' originally began spinning tracks as an excuse to stand around and drink. That was some eight years and countless beers ago (both domestic and imported). In that time he’s been a regular DJ across all of Melbourne’s social dancing venues whilst also building up extensive experience at both interstate and international events. Nowadays you can catch Anthony once a fortnight at Melbourne’s own Madame Dynamite’s where the Madame always dishes up a satisfying feast of piping hot jazz.
Set in his ways and too old to change, Anthony’s taste for music extends from the early Charleston era, through the big band bash of the 30's and 40's into select items of later years. Favourite artists include Eddie Condon, Fats Waller, Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and Lucky Millinder. As a lover of Charleston and fast dancing, he’s not opposed to throwing the occasional speedy track into his sets. Similarly, he has a great range of cruisy, bluesy numbers to cover off the slower tempos. Put simply, there's something to whet everyone’s jazz appetite when Anthony is on the decks.

Darren Witt

Melbourne

Darren started DJing in 2003, establishing Bridie O'Reilly's as the place to dance on a Monday night in Melbourne. He also played at the other Melbourne venues, such as CBD and Funpit. He took a break from DJing for a couple of years, while looking for something different to bring back the thrill of playing for dancers. After travelling to the U.S. and hearing the music being played in venues in Seattle, and at Sugarfoot Stomp in L.A., he found what he was looking for. Earlier this year, he started back DJing, and is now one of the regular house DJs at Madame Dynamite's.

The MJDA

MLX5, MLX6, MLX7 and MLX8 are all Melbourne Jazz Dance Association projects. The MJDA is a non-profit organisation devoted to the preservation and promotion of vernacular jazz dance and music in Melbourne, Australia.

Founded in 2005, the MJDA began with its first event, the fifth annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange - MLX5: the Shoestring Exchange. The MLX5 theme reflected not only the MJDA's budget for the event, but also their commitment to providing affordable, quality social swing dancing events in Melbourne.

In 2006 the MJDA followed the success of the Shoestring Exchange with MLX6: the Fat Lotta Good Exchange, and in 2007 they took the Melbourne Lindy Exchange to a new level with MLX7: the Kick Ass Exchange.

The MJDA was founded by Sam Carroll, Di King, Brian Renehan, Wendy Rehehan and Darren Witt but welcomes new members, encouraging them to make contact for more information.

MLX8 organising team

This year's MLX is run by the MJDA and steered by Di, Sam, Sally, Jaymee, Keith and Darren.
Additional help is provided by a team of volunteers, sponsors and 'consultants', without whom this exchange could not be run.

Sam Carroll

Sam began swing dancing in Brisbane in 1999, and has travelled all over Australia and overseas trying to get someone to dance with her. She's been pushing lindy on people since 2001, helping to organise events like Melbourne's weekly Ballyhoo, annual Easter Hop and the inaugural Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize. She was in at the start with MLX, volunteering in 2001 and organising in 2002. But in 2005 Brian, Wendy, Di and Darren convinced her that partying all weekend long on the social dance floor would be far more fun than running classes, and they held the first all-social dancing Melbourne Lindy Exchange: MLX5. The same group founded the MJDA to run the whole thing.

Keith Hsuan

A relative newcomer to the swing scene, Keith started dancing in 2004. He quickly got involved, volunteering at SwingCity Melbourne six months after learning his first swingout. Since then, he's volunteered at a variety of swing events, including MLX5 and the inaugural Melbourne Swing Festival. In his other life, Keith has been involved with running many other clubs, organising many successful events along the way.

Dianne King

Dianne has been swing dancing since 2000. She has traveled throughout Australia to dance and has been a big part of MLX from the start. She has been managed registrations for all previous MLX's, in 2005 taking on the role of managing not only registrations but also the workshops for Swing City. She was one of the main organisers for MLX5 and MLX6. She is wondering if she is slightly insane in volunteering again this year, but is surrounded by such a great group of people that she is confident that it will all turn out for the best.

Jaymee Lee

Ever since falling over in his first class, Jaymee has been inventing new ways to stay on his feet whilst dancing the Lindy Hop. From humble beginnings in a famously little town called Lismore back in 2004, he has hopped, skipped and jumped on dance floors all around the globe. An avid social dancer and musician, he thrives on the vibe of a swinging live band and can always be found swingin’ out tune after tune in the centre of the dance floor. Recently settled in Melbourne, Jaymee joins the MLX team contributing his logistical, technical and event management skills from a background of music, dance and amateur theatre productions.

Sally Winter

Sal began swing dancing in Melbourne, and has travelled and danced all over Australia (love those Perthies) and Europe (did someone say Herrang?). She is usually found on the dance floor busting out with some wicked solo stuff or harassing people to "swing ooooout like Frankie & Norma". She's been pushing the MLX team with event ideas, themes and been part of the decorating team since 2003. Having worked in major events, from The Australian Open to Cirque du Soleil, she comes to the table with more than enough madness, practical experience and "think big" dreams for the entire committee. Her mantra for MLX8 is that partying all weekend long on the social dance floor is nothing without glamorous outfits, venues and decor that echo the golden era of lindy, and showing off the city of Melbourne. We are proud to have her join the MJDA in a major organisational role in 2008.

Darren Witt

Darren has been swing dancing since 2002, and danced in many Australian cities. In 2005 he spent three months in the US where he attended a number of swing dance events. Darren was a volunteer with MLX in 2003 and 2004, and with many other swing dance events in Melbourne during that time. He was also involved in running Swing Aid 2005, a Tsunami relief event. Darren began DJing for swing dancers in Melbourne in early 2004. He has also been involved in several Science Fiction conventions in Melbourne. Darren has been a part of the MJDA from the start and after a year's break we welcome him back on board.

Melbourne Lindy Exchange

The first Melbourne Lindy Exchange was run in 2001 by Matthew Riddle and a team of volunteers and featured workshops taught local and international teachers. The second Melbourne Lindy Exchange - MLX: Get On The Floor - was held the following year, again run by a team of volunteers with Matt Riddle and featuring both local and international teachers, yet this time hosting the first annual Australian Hellzapoppin' prize, whose goal was to provide funds for Australian dancers to attend the first Hellzapoppin' competition in the USA. The third MLX - MLX: Harlem Comes to Melbourne - was again a volunteer-run event, this time seeing Matt's partner Lotte Geldoff involved as a key organiser, and featured workshops with international teachers. In 2004 the Melbourne Lindy Exchange was run in conjunction with Swing City over a week, and again featured a host of volunteers and organisers, and showcased both local and international teachers and musicians.

The 2005 Melbourne Lindy Exchange was steered by the MJDA as MLX5: the Shoe String Exchange, in 2006 as the MLX6: the Fat Lotta Good Exchange and in 2007 as MLX7: the Kick Ass Exchange. MLX8: the Exchange of the Living Dead is the third MJDA-run Melbourne Lindy Exchange.

Check out our Program.

This year the MJDA is reanimating the best of the swing era with
MLX8: Exchange of the Living Dead!
inspired by the creepiest classic horror films of Hollywood’s 1920s, 30s and 40s.
And to really set the weekend on fire - it's back! The Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize returns to Melbourne in 2008.

Tickets and Passes

To get the best value for your dancing dollars register for an MLX8 pass to score an amazing discount. But if you miss out on a pass, we will still be selling tickets to individual events at the door.

Thursday 27th November

Menace of the Mummy

8:30pm Thursday-Late

The Fabulous Speigletent

$10 or free with an MLX pass

MLX8 Comes to life at the grand opening night private party at the world famous Spiegeltent…
Step back to the 1920s, the era of Charleston and Hot Jazz.
The discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb leads to Egypt being in Vogue, think glamour, tuxedos & flapper girls, pompous British explorers with safari suits, the debut of Art Deco, & the men of Cairo in their fez.
Dress accordingly.
PRIZE : One lucky fella and one great dame will receive a 2009 MLX pass for the most glamorous or suitably themed outfit.
08.30pm- Late : Drinks on the terrace
11.00pm- late : Dancing in the tent

Friday 28th November

Hellzapoppin'

Step back to the 1930s and spend a night at the Savoy Ballroom.
We start the night early with the Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize. This is the competition Australian swing dancers love - and fear! - most.
Fast, furious, freakin' hot and hard-core. No rules. No runners-Up. Just one winner. And one awesome Prize.
The Prize:
2 FULL PASSES for
SWING CAMP OZ
JANUARY 25-30, 2009
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA

…then The JW Swing Orchestra will be swinging hard from 9pm for three solid hours of social dancing delights. Hades certainly will be a poppin' at the fanciest ball you’ll attend this year, with all the dancing wickedness a body can take... or sit back, enjoy the music and a world class European beer from the bar.
For competitor information see the Australian Hellzapoppin' Prize Information page.

Le Manoir du Diable

$15 or free with an MLX8 pass

Having survived the furious, freakin' hot and hard-core dancing of Hellzapoppin', welcome to Le Manoir du diable, The House of the Devil ! Dance til dawn with some of the finest local and visiting DJs with solid swinging action in the main room and, a first for MLX, seriously old and scratchy action in the back room... because some band leaders just won't stay dead!

Saturday 29th November

Something Wicked This Way Comes

4-7pm Saturday

The Laundry, 50 Johnston St, Fitzroy

The #96 tram down Nicholson St, or the #112 tram down Brunswick St.

Free - but the band will pass the hat and welcome any contributions to their bar tab.

Find your after-life on the dance floor or bury yourself at the bar at this regular Saturday afternoon band gig. Chris Tanner's Virus have had this residency for years, and are joined by locals and jazz fans every Saturday afternoon.

Dawn of the Dead

8pm till dawn, Saturday

Forever Dance ballroom, 432 Church St, Richmond

#70 tram runs down nearby Swan St from the city

$35 before midnight, $15 after midnight or free with an MLX8 pass

After sleeping all day, stagger onto the dance floor and shake it like you still have a pulse.
We'll tempt you with naughtiness in all its deliciously wicked forms, from furiously fast swinging jazz to seriously slow and saucy music in two rooms to hellish treats from the Zombie “I screeeam” bar.

With two bands playing back to back in two rooms, you can be sure of a frighteningly good time: Carol Ralph and Friends return after a triumphant MLX7 and The Sweet Lowdowns take up where the Red Hot Rythmakers left off. And once we've passed the witching hour, our spookily awesome DJs will dance you til dawn: once again the main room will be just right for lindy hop while the back room will be wickedly right for blues dancing.

Sunday 30th November

Feast of the Vampires

8pm - 3am Sunday

Forever Dance, 432 Church St, Richmond

#70 tram runs down nearby Swan St from the city

$20 or free with an MLX8 pass

No dread of Dracula here, this lair is for creatures with ravishing dance appetites who still want just a little more.
Over-indulge with the best DJs in two rooms, gorge on pizza and beers - all at the MJDA's expense, of course!
The slayer might even enjoy this Monsterfest - so keep an eye out for the chosen one!
